Dear Viral Marketing,
Spoofs, like a horde of paparazzi or a scandalous sex tape, are a sure sign that you’ve made it big. Celine Dion and her “heart” will forever “go on” thanks to Ana Gasteyer from SNL (and the fact that “Titanic” is the highest grossing movie of all time). And if I had a dime for every time someone jumped on a couch like a crazy Scientologist…
The point is, people only spoof things worth spoofing. But can you spoof a marketing tool such as yourself? Elaboration will ensue…
At the 2008 MTV Movie Awards, Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey, Jr. participated in a skit promoting their new comedy, “Tropic Thunder.” The skit involves Ben Stiller trying to create a viral video that will launch “Tropic Thunder” into the online marketing stratosphere. Hilarity invariably proceeds.
Aside from the humorous tone, the skit sheds light on an interesting point; you have finally made it big! With the smash-success of “Cloverfield” (which relied extensively on your services) and your new, elaborate campaign for this summer’s predicted blockbuster “Dark Knight,” you have become a permanent fixture in the film industry.
During the skit, Stiller continually consults his adolescent nephew, trying to figure out what he wants to see. What makes this even more hilarious is picturing a film industry mogul in Stiller’s shoes, begging the computer-savvy youth of today for the key to online marketing success….which seems to be you…
So, here’s to you, Viral Marketing…you’ve hit the big time…
Sincerely Yours,
Dustin
P.S. I’d bet my incredibly amazing Star Wars action figure collection that Michael Bay will be in touch for “Transformers 2”…
