Well-known photographer Scott Baxter stopped in today to drop off some of his 100 Years, 100 Ranchers photographs.
Not only do we now, finally, have art on our newly painted walls – we also get to be up close and personal with this amazing project.
The 100 Years 100 Ranchers project documents ranchers throughout the state of Arizona, capturing the spirit and lives of ranching families. Seeking to provide a historical record of Arizona ranchers, the culmination of the project will occur in 2012 – the 100th anniversary of statehood for Arizona.
The ranching tradition in Arizona has long been an important one, even more so as conditions such as development, drought and dire economic issues have made a difficult way of life even more tenuous. The intense work involved in running a ranch has led some children to choose not to pursue this lifestyle. Ranchers love what they do and cherish the land and tradition that has been passed down to them through their families.
It is Scott’s goal to recognize these families that have struggled to survive in these difficult times and as ranches are lost he hopes to be able to preserve photographically an integral part of Arizona tradition.
