So the musical group Weezer released a new single, “Pork and Beans,” and it now has a music video…the best music video ever! The video was posted on YouTube on the 23rd, and is the number one most watched video this week. Why the buzz? The video brings together all our favorite YouTube ce-web-rities, a veritable SuperSmash Bros-esque amalgamation of internet superstars. From the Numa-Numa dancing phenom to the fizz-alicious Mentos & Diet Coke duo, the mascara-streaked Chris Crocker to the lightsaber wielding Ryan & Dorkman, this video feels like a walk down Web cookie lane. But how did they get all these Web stars in one room? As one YouTube member comments, “they probably just paid for a few Motel 6 rooms and promised a crafts service table.” LOL to that!
With over 30 YouTube references, this video packs a whole lot o’ nostalgia. One can only wonder what the atmosphere was like on the set…”My (**move away from the mic to breathe in) YouTube video is better than yours!” I’m looking forward to the “Making-Of” video.
This video is further proof of the power of the internet…you don’t need Michael Bay blowing up your grandma’s Volvo to make a smash hit (although, that would be cool). All you need is a camcorder and a heart of gold (or at least a unicorn named Charlie).
I think it’s sweet that Weezer is giving these cyber-memes another 15 minutes of fame…or at least 15 seconds of lip syncing…
