Burger King has started a new viral campaign for the holidays. Though it doesn’t show much holiday spirit, it’ll be interesting to see how much activity this campaign receives. British accents and funny insults always seem to entertain:
This is very similar to the campaign for New Line Cinema’s film “Snakes on a Plane” starring Samuel L. Jackson. During the weeks before the movie premiered, fans could go online and arrange a phone call by Jackson to a friend of their choice. They would provide details for the phone call, including the friends name, phone number and an activity they might be doing in place of seeing the upcoming film, and the cell phone would ring with a message from Jackson, using pre-recorded content, ordering them to see the movie.
The URL, http://snakesonaplane.varitalk.com, now re-directs to New Line Cinema’s page for the movie. But while the phones were ringing, many were laughing.
Can Burger King capture the same attention and viral activity?
Did the Samuel L. Jackson phone call campaign work because of the cult following the film garnered before even premiering?
What about the cult following of the actor placing the call? Will anyone care about this angry Whopper if he didn’t provide some of the most fun to quote lines in movie history courtesy of a little flick called “Pulp Fiction”?
Will people enjoy this simply because they like hearing characters talk directly to them, especially in funny voices?
Please, your opinions could shape burger campaigns of the future….
